What is chiropractic?

The name ‘chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words chéri (‘hand’) and praktos (‘done’) – meaning ‘done by hand’. Chiropractic is a regulated healthcare profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and their effects on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue hands-on manipulation. Chiropractic care can help to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve overall wellbeing.

Chiropractic is considered to be a safe and effective form of treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are associated with a low risk of adverse effects when performed by a qualified practitioner, and are generally well tolerated by patients. However, as with any medical treatment, there are potential risks and side effects that your chiropractor will discuss with you prior to beginning treatment.

Treatments are usually painless. You may feel some discomfort while we work on the affected area. Your chiropractor can modify the treatment to ensure she works within your comfort zone.

No, you do not need a referral from your GP to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners, so they are able to carry out all aspects of care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and advice.

The number of sessions you will need is highly dependent on the particular problem you have. It will also be affected by how long you’ve had this problem, how willing you are to change habits which may be negatively affecting it, as well as how quickly your body responds to treatment. Your chiropractor will discuss this with you at your initial consultation.

Your chiropractor will recommend a plan of action to get you the results you want. We will not ask you to pay in advance for your whole treatment plan. You can decide to discontinue care at any point.
